Roskam Campaign Announces Pro-Environment Battery Recycling Program
Recycling Our Way to a Better Future Today, the Roskam for Congress campaign announced the creation of a household battery recycling program, providing constituents with the opportunity to personally be good stewards of the environment. The recycling program, started in light of the City of Wheaton’s decision to cut their highly successful battery recycling initiative, is the latest in a long line of energy conserving and environmentally responsible proposals and initiatives from Rep. Peter Roskam. "The battery recycling program is an example of private citizens working together in a spirit of environmental stewardship that protects basic needs like our air and water supply," said Congressman Peter Roskam. "This will provide constituents with the opportunity to personally invest in and pass down a cleaner, greener planet to our children and grandchildren." The battery recycling program will provide the opportunity for constituents to properly dispose of household batteries, which contain hazardous waste materials dangerous to the air and water supply. Roskam's campaign office, located at 333 South Cross St. in Wheaton, will be the collection site for the batteries. Roskam launched the initiative in light of the City of Wheaton’s decision to cut the highly successful battery recycling program, which recycled over eight tons of used batteries in just eleven months of existence. This is the latest in a long line of Roskam proposals to promote environmental responsibility, including being an early vocal proponent of Wheaton's curb-side recycling program, working with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to prevent BP from dumping more pollutants in Lake Michigan, and introducing the Energy VISION Act to promote renewable and alternative fuels and wean us off foreign oil in 15 years. The battery recycling program is a potent example of the power of private solutions enabling environmental stewardship.
